Company History
The large equipment manufacturer Unio SA was established in 1911 and located in Satu Mare, Romania, 630 km from Bucharest and 13 km from the Hungarian border of Romania.
In its early years, Unio manufactured carpentry products and sold forestry products.
In 1921 the company expanded its production facilities with a small wagon repair shop. Based on the orders received from C.F.R. (The Romanian Railroad Company), the Unio factory was, at that time, on the third place among the Romanian railway suppliers. In 1927, Unio began manufacturing new types of freight and passenger wagons, such as 4-axle wagons – for the first time in the country and “Pullman” wagons, of which 20 pieces were delivered that year.
Since 1951, Unio has become the leading supplier of mining equipment for mining wagons, belt conveyors, scraper conveyors, mine locomotives, ore loaders, high-capacity belt conveyors, hoists and ball mills.

In parallel, Unio has had spectacular collaborations with world-renowned companies participating in the realization of their projects in Romania: RENAULT – DACIA car plant, CITROEN – OLTCIT car plant, ANSALDO – Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, TAKRAF – Mining Excavators, NISHO IWAI – Steel Targoviste.
After 1990, UNIO turned its full force to the foreign market, especially the European market. After a period of adaptation, we managed to develop long-term collaborative relationships with world-renowned partners: Siemens, Komatsu, Thyssen Krupp, Deutsche Babcock, Komatsu, Flender AG, Michael Weinig AG, Homag AG, General Electric, Ingersoll Rand, Kuka , Technip Coflexip.
Starting with the year 2000, after the privatization of the enterprise, a process of adaptation to the requirements of the market economy was started. A refurbishment took place through the implementation of new technologies in the sections of cutting, mechanical processing, welding, teeth, heat treatment, surface protection and control. Thus, specialized production lines have been created in which products are made, especially for the Western European market.

We are one of the important large equipment manufacturers in Europe and, during more than 110 years of existence, we built over 40,000 customer-specific items. In the last 3 decades we specialised in equipment for the marine industry, but we can carry out any project based on the customer’s technical specification.
An important advantage recognized by the beneficiaries is the existence on the same platform both of the preparatory sections (cutting, forging, foundry, mechanical processing, teeth) and of the production sections (welded assemblies, assembly, surface protection, technical control). The personnel specialized in mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical installations ensures the assembly works to the beneficiary, commissioning and service.
Our total area (workshop and office area) is 60.000 sqm and consists of:
- Carbon Steel Workshop
- Heat treatment hall
- Welding hall
- Assembly hall
- Surface treatment hall
- Test hall (NDT, destructive and hardness testing)
- Several storage halls
- Exterior crane which can lift up to 50 tonnes.
With over 220 employees, Unio is able to execute full sized complex projects involving:

Our production is in accordance to DNV and other marine industry standards and fully complies with ISO 9001 Quality Management policy.
More than 85% of the production is destined to the external market, especially to clients from Germany, Holland, France, Italy, Norway, England and Austria.
